Haywood Waterways Association, Southwestern NC Resource Conservation & Development Council and Haywood Soil & Water Conservation District, working as partners, brought the concept of a watershed friendly storm water management system for the new Bethel Elementary School to the Haywood County School Board. With an enthusiastic "yes" as their reply, the partners then secured the grant funding which enabled the school system to develop the project. Bradshaw Engineering and Equinox Environmental Consultation & Design were the planning and design team for this innovative storm water management system. This was an exciting opportunity to help protect the water quality of the Upper Pigeon River (designated trout waters and Canton's water supply) as well as provide an important educational resource for the Bethel students and the entire Haywood County community.
Equinox Environmental was hired to (1) design the storm water controls, which included a constructed wetland, bioretention areas, filter strips and a rain infiltration tank, (2) design the educational kiosk and (3) design the educational signs that describe the overall project and each of the storm water controls employed. The expertise and knowledge of the Equinox staff was obvious from the start. They showed an obvious passsion for protecting water quality and the quality of their work. They were patient when listening to our ideas and offered many creative ones of their own that made the educational component of the project so outstanding. The fact that they were easy to contact and very responsive when revisions were necessary made this complex project a tremendous success.
We are thankful to Equinox for their contributions to the Bethel Elementary School. They are certainly one of the main reasons for the local pride and tremendous praise for the new Bethel Elementary School...
